|
Poszli do kina. Wyświetlano stary polski film o morzu. Zaślubiny z morzem, czy coś... Kacper i Kola nie jedli popcornu. Siedzieli nieruchomo, obserwując przeróżne nie zawsze kulturalne reakcje widowni złożonej z mieszkańców Kołobrzegu. Na koncercie kwartetu smyczkowego Kola zamknęła oczy, jakby słuchała czegoś poza dźwiękiem. Klasnęła dokładnie wtedy, gdy ucichły ostatnie takty.
|
Odwiedzili bibliotekę i Muzeum Oręża Polskiego. Pytali o legendy rybackie, o wraki, o tajemnicze światła na morzu. Legendy. Podania. Klechdy.

Lisiecka-Drągała zamknęła plik i wyjęła teczkę z napisem "NATO CONFIDENTIAL (NC)" - poufne. Na okładce napisała: „Obiekt: Gwiezdne dzieci. Status: Obserwacja Kołobrzeg”. -dopisała zakres dat. Zamknęła w ekranizowanej szafie pancernej w kancelarii tajnej.
|
Ale i on to zbagatelizuje.
|
One są wśród nas. Liczby nie kłamią.

I czeka na kolejny sygnał.

It was still before the tourist season when the EIP Pendolino train to Kołobrzeg was delayed by exactly four hundred and forty-four minutes. The platform was empty; the wind carried the smell of salt and wet concrete. The Nowak family came down the metal steps calmly, as if the delay were part of the plan. Kacper, aged thirteen, and his sister Kola — their parents called her by the diminutive of Nikolina — did not look tired. On the contrary. They looked around carefully, as if checking whether the town was real the way it appeared in the many colourful, visually attractive tourist guides with a million photographs scattered all over the planet.
They had rented a large room; it was a pre-war holiday house on Morska Street. A villa with a mansard roof, creaking stairs and an old lift that smelled of oil. Kacper and Kola went around every corner, touched the walls, peered behind the old wooden furniture, then stood by the window staring at the grey sea of that time of year. Their father said only: “Good that we’re finally here.” Their mother nodded.
They mostly walked with their parents along the empty beach. At that time of year it was fucking freezing, but they did not complain. Kola collected shells and arranged them in an even row on the sand, as if she were coding something in binary. Kacper stared at the horizon for a long time. Then he whispered: “The magnetic field here is two hundredths of a percent weaker. Interesting.” His mother gently laid her hand on his shoulder. “Quieter, or someone will hear,” she said.
When the supplies ran out — and not only the sweets — they went to the PSS Społem supermarket. At the checkout Kacper handed over the banknotes without looking at the price. On the display appeared: ****444.00 zł**** (another synchronisation). The cashier raised her eyebrows. “Are you paying by card or cash? Where are you from??!! Are you going to eat all that??” she said. Kacper only nodded. Kola smiled. Their father took the receipt and put it in his wallet as if it were some kind of admission ticket. Write in the comments where, please?
They went to the cinema. An old Polish film about the sea was showing. The Marriage to the Sea, or something… Kacper and Kola did not eat popcorn. They sat motionless, observing the various, not always cultured reactions of the audience composed of the residents of Kołobrzeg. At a string quartet concert Kola closed her eyes as if she were listening to something beyond the sound. She clapped exactly when the final bars died away.
They visited the library and the Museum of Polish Arms. They asked about fishing legends, about wrecks, about mysterious lights on the sea. Legends. Tales. Folk stories. Folk novels. An old, fucking stinking, lame fisherman told them about a ship that disappeared without a trace in the 1950s. Kacper noted something down in a small, childish, kitschy notebook that his mother had bought him. Afterwards the fisherman could not remember the boy’s face, though he remembered every word of the conversation.
On the pier Kacper’s reduced ticket had the number #444 — he was only the 444th person to enter the pier that year. The ticket seller printed the strip, looked at the number and joked: “Sir, what a lucky number. And you got it quickly, because there are no queues at this time of year.” Kacper answered politely: “Yes. Thank you” — he was a very well-mannered boy with royal manners. Then he and Kola stood for a long time at the end of the pier, staring at the sea, their jackets flapping in the wind. A fine drizzle.
They photographed themselves everywhere the way the Chinese do on holiday. On the beach, against the lighthouse, in front of the museum entrance, by monuments, sculptures… They looked like ordinary tourists, with the difference that they were very calm and well-mannered. No one noticed them. Tourists and residents would forget their faces, their voices, even the fact that they had been there at all. No one would remember them. No one photographed them. After they left they vanished from the history and the memory of the town.
…but… Wait! Only the Local Branch of the Military Counterintelligence Service would not forget this visit.
In the IT system, in the anomaly analysis module, a triple synchronisation of the number 4.00 4.00 4.00 /00110100 00110100 00110100/ was registered. The train delayed by four hundred and forty-four minutes. Shopping at PSS Społem for four hundred and forty-four zlotys. Reduced ticket number four hundred and forty-four. Everything once again linked to one surname: Kacper Nowak, aged thirteen, temporarily registered at the villa on Morska Street.
Lieutenant Ewa Lisiecka-Drągała sat stiffly as if paralysed in front of the monitor. All of us in intelligence know that the mathematical algorithm calculated that the probability of a random coincidence is a mere 0.000000013 percent. Such cases do not exist in nature. A straight line on any graph does not exist in nature — in practice a perfectly straight graph has never yet occurred. She opened the file encrypted by the cryptologists. She found photographs from the municipal CCTV — persons already known in the database of the Ministry of National Defence. The family looked normal at first glance. Father in a grey jacket, mother in an old knitted hat, two children. But when she enlarged the frame from the camera on the pier, she noticed that the shadows of Kacper and Kola fell in the opposite direction to their father’s shadow. The sun was behind them.
In one of the photographs taken by Kacper on his phone on the beach, three lights in a straight line were visible in the background. The analyst enlarged the image. The lights formed a triangle. Then, against all logic, they disappeared from the pixels.
Lisiecka-Drągała closed the file and took out a folder marked “NATO CONFIDENTIAL (NC)” — confidential. On the cover she wrote: “Object: Star Children. Status: Observation Kołobrzeg.” — and added the date range. She locked it in a screened armoured safe in the secret registry.
She knew that no one in the town would remember the family from the villa. Perhaps only the old fisherman would wake up in the night with the impression that there had been too many transcendent stars in the boy’s eyes. But even he would dismiss it.
They are among us. Numbers do not lie.
The Branch registered 444.
And it waits for the next signal.

Kola a souri.
» Kacper a répondu poliment : « Oui.
L’analyste a agrandi l’image.
